HUMAN LIFE IS PRECIOUS

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

Today, I write to you with a heavy heart, reflecting on a grievous issue that continues to plague our society: the tragic loss of life due to gender-based violence. As we are reminded in scripture, You shall not murder (Exodus 20:13), it is essential for us to recognise the profound value of human life as a sacred gift from God. Many families are currently engulfed in sorrow, mourning the untimely deaths of their loved ones, young women whose lives have been cut short by those who should have been their protectors.

These acts, committed in the name of love, are nothing short of cowardice. Men who resort to violence often do so out of a distorted sense of possession or betrayal, claiming heartache over infidelity or abandonment as justification for their horrific actions. It is vital to understand that every individual possesses the right to seek happiness in their relationships. If a woman chooses to move on, it should be respected. While the pain of rejection is undeniable, true strength is found in acceptance and the ability to resolve conflicts without resorting to violence. The senseless act of killing is never justifiable, and it is a stark contrast to the resilience that women often display in navigating the complexities of their relationships.

Address

As a young man, I feel compelled to address my peers directly: We must dismantle the culture of viewing relationships as transactions. Investing in a partner with the expectation of lifelong loyalty can lead to heartbreak and, tragically, violence. Genuine support should come from a place of altruism, not obligation. Many men invest significant resources in supporting their partners’ education or career aspirations, only to feel abandoned when their partners achieve independence. This sense of betrayal can lead to devastating consequences, but it does not excuse violent behaviour. To combat the rampant issue of gender-based violence, it is imperative that men reevaluate their motivations and actions.

Relationships should be founded on mutual respect and understanding, rather than possessiveness. Furthermore, women should aspire for independence, cultivating their self-reliance and avoiding dependency that can lead to unhealthy dynamics. Ultimately, we must foster a culture that values life and promotes respect within relationships. Let us advocate for a society where love is not synonymous with control, and where every individual can pursue happiness free from fear. Human life is precious, and we are all responsible for nurturing an environment that reflects this truth. Thank you for taking the time to reflect on these vital issues. Together, we can work towards a future where respect and love guide our relationships, rather than fear and violence.
