REDISCOVERING THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS

Sir,

As we approach the festive season, I find myself reflecting on what Christmas truly means. Growing up, Christmas was a sacred time that reminded us of the birth of Christ, it was a celebration deeply rooted in faith and gratitude. However, it seems that over time, the essence of Christmas has been overshadowed.Nowadays, many people associate Christmas with holidays, bonuses and decorations, let us be honest, who does not love a good bonus? But while there is nothing wrong with enjoying these perks and the excitement of untangling last year’s Christmas lights, I feel we have lost sight of its true significance. Take Christmas movies for example, every year, we are treated to a predictable line-up of love, miracles, and feel-good snowstorms during this time of the year, but rarely or never of the birth of Christ.

I speak not to judge anyone or any church, but to share my personal view. I am truly grateful for the church I attend, which still honours and celebrates the birth of Christ during Christmas, just as I was taught growing up.It is a reminder of why we observe this special day, to remember the arrival of our Saviour, as described in the Gospels of Matthew, Luke and John to mention a few others.Interestingly, the word ‘Christmas’ itself, was derived from ‘Christ Mass’, which points to a day or season to commemorate the birth of Jesus. This should be the heart of our celebrations. Yet, when you ask children about Christmas, many will mention Christmas trees, gifts and Santa Claus, but few understand the true meaning.

As a nation, I believe it is time for us to pause and reflect, especially with what’s happening around us today. Amid the challenges we have faced in recent years, perhaps we need to return to the roots of Christmas. Who are we celebrating, and why? Let us not forget that this is a time to honour the birth of Christ, the one who brought hope and salvation to the world.
Let us teach our children and remind ourselves that Christmas is more than festivities! It’s a time of faith, love and gratitude. Only then can we truly celebrate Christmas in its fullness.
