APPRECIATING SPIRIT OF CHARITY THIS FESTIVE
Sir,
This festive season it is heartening to reflect on the remarkable spirit of charity that has recently been exemplified by the Eswatini Sugar Association (ESA) in partnership with the Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross Society.
Their generous contribution of new homes to two families in dire need, Sarafina Motsa and Xolisile Dlamini has not only transformed their lives, but has also ignited a beacon of hope for our community. The stories of Motsa, who at 77, has faced unimaginable hardships since losing her home to a storm in 2022, and Dlamini, who has long struggled with inadequate shelter, remind us of the profound impact that compassion can have.
Selected
These women, selected through a thorough needs assessment, serve as poignant examples of resilience and the importance of community support. Their heartfelt gratitude is a testament to how targeted charitable initiatives can change lives. ESA’s corporate social investment (CSI) programme, which has seen the construction of seven houses this year alone, illustrates the power of collaboration in addressing social challenges. As ESA CEO Banele Nyamane aptly noted: “Through our CSI initiative, we aim to touch lives and bring hope to those in need.” This ethos of community upliftment should inspire other companies and organisations to follow suit, reminding us that ‘charity begins at home’.
Challenges
In a world often marred by challenges, the selfless actions of ESA and Baphalali shine brightly, demonstrating that collective action can yield transformative change. Their commitment to ensuring that vulnerable communities receive the support they require is a clarion call for all organisations to engage in similar endeavours. As the saying goes, “Many hands make light work.” By pooling resources and working together, we can create a ripple effect of kindness that extends far beyond individual contributions. However, while we celebrate these successes, we must also acknowledge the harsh realities faced by many in our communities, such as those in Bhunya. The struggles of families who lack basic necessities and stable housing, remind us that the need for assistance is still pressing.
Reflection
This festive season should not only be a time for celebration only, but also for reflection on how we can continue to support those less fortunate. I encourage local businesses, organisations and individuals to embrace the spirit of giving this festive season. Whether through financial donations, volunteering or simply spreading awareness, every little effort counts. Let us come together to ensure that no one is left behind, and that everyone can experience the warmth and joy of the holiday season.
