EMPOWER CITIZENS, BUSINESSES
Madam,
To enhance revenue generation, it is imperative for government to empower individuals and businesses. The fundamental role of any government is to regulate society and the economy; thus, the idea of liberating people may take some time to resonate. Government must engage in self-reflection and revisit its core purpose. In essence, it is meant to organise the economy, act as an ‘invisible hand’ to address market and social failures, and ensure that citizens can improve their living standards.
Currently, many people question the motivation behind their daily labour, feeling as though government is increasingly encroaching on their finances, demanding more and more from their earnings. For those fortunate enough to secure a well-paying job, it quickly becomes clear that nearly half of that income is claimed by tax authorities. With government intervention, personal incomes dwindle, stifling the economic vitality of Eswatini. For aspiring entrepreneurs, the tax burden further diminishes their earnings, as the state relentlessly extracts funds from their businesses. I am not fundamentally opposed to taxation; however, the continuous taxation of the same individuals and enterprises does little to stimulate economic growth or enhance living standards in Eswatini.
The current system often punishes those striving to improve their circumstances and support their families. Government must focus on liberating individuals by ensuring they retain sufficient income to engage in economic activities. Simultaneously, it should work towards financially liberating businesses, enabling the private sector to expand in both number and scale. This growth would ultimately result in a broader base of taxpayers, thereby increasing government revenue. By fostering an environment where people and businesses can thrive, government can create a more prosperous society for all citizens. It is time for government to reconsider its approach and prioritise the empowerment of its constituents.
