NO EXCUSE FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE

Sir,

Some time ago I recently visited a local clinic for a medical requisition, and upon arriving, I was struck by a powerful poster at the entrance that read, “No Excuse For Domestic Abuse.” Those words resonated deeply with me, prompting an urgent reflection on the state of domestic abuse awareness in Eswatini. As I stood there, I began to question whether individuals who encounter this message fully grasp its significance. It pains me to consider the reality of living in an environment where domestic abuse is not only acknowledged but often accepted as a norm. Isn’t it alarming to think that many may dismiss such a serious issue?

Failure

Domestic abuse is not merely a personal issue; it is a societal failure that demands our collective attention and action. The statistics surrounding domestic abuse are staggering and continue to rise at an alarming rate. Each day brings new reports of incidents that leave us heartbroken and outraged. Regardless of the victim’s age—be it a child, a teenager or an adult—domestic abuse is unequivocally unacceptable. Are we not loud enough in our condemnation of this vile act? It is particularly disheartening to note that many perpetrators remain oblivious to the impact of their actions.

Misconception

Some individuals mistakenly believe that physical violence is the only form of abuse. This misconception obscures the reality that countless people suffer from emotional, psychological and even financial abuse. The truth is that domestic abuse encompasses a spectrum of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading and violent behaviours, often perpetuated by someone close to the victim.

As we are about to enter 2025, I hold onto the hope that Eswatini will become a nation free from the shackles of domestic abuse. It is crucial that our government and community leaders intensify their efforts to raise awareness and educate the public about the various forms of abuse. Initiatives that promote healthy relationships, respect and equality must be prioritised. We need to foster an environment where individuals feel empowered to speak out against abuse, knowing they will be supported rather than silenced.

As a society, we must adopt a zero-tolerance approach to domestic abuse. There should be no excuses for condoning or overlooking such behaviour. We must collectively challenge the cultural norms that allow abuse to persist and ensure that victims have access to the resources and support they need to escape these situations. In conclusion, let us all commit to making 2025 a turning point in our fight against domestic abuse in Eswatini. Together, we can build a future where every individual is treated with dignity and respect.
Let us raise our voices in unity against domestic abuse.
