DISTANCE YOURSELVES FROM POLITICAL TENSIONS
Sir,
For the past months, the political landscape in Eswatini has grown increasingly volatile. The unrest that began with protests and demonstrations has evolved into a full-blown online war, with political party members and leaders trading barbs and threats on social media platforms like Facebook. The situation has taken a dire turn, with allegations of intentional harm and loss of life. The political leaders and their close associates, who are now in exile, had attempted to overthrow the Government of Eswatini, but their plans failed. In the aftermath, they have turned on each other, pointing fingers and revealing dark secrets.
Actions
The consequences of their actions have been devastating, leading to the loss of life of some citizens during the unrest. The online feuds have become a way for them to shift the blame and distract from their own culpability. The online battles, often waged on Facebook, have become intense and personal. The bitter exchanges between SWALIMO President Mduduzi Simelane and PUDEMO President Mlungisi Makhanya have set the tone for a toxic online environment. Meanwhile, Swaziland News’ editor Zweli Martin Dlamini and Swazi Voice Of the People News’ editor Thabiso Moloi have been trading blows, further fuelling the fire. In a separate but related feud, Cece Shongwe has been locked in a heated battle with SWALIMO’s Gift Dlamini, Gaw’zela and Mufasa’s Lungelo from Ludzeludze. These online skirmishes have created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty.
Tragically, the consequences of these political tensions have been devastating. The loss of life, including that of Bheki Magagula, serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of being caught up in the political fray. In light of these developments, it’s imperative that emaSwati take a step back and prioritise their safety and well-being. We urge citizens to distance themselves from political tensions and avoid getting drawn into the online feuds that are poisoning our discourse. It’s time for emaSwati to reclaim their nation and their narrative. Instead of being pawns in a game of political brinksmanship, we must focus on building bridges, promoting understanding and fostering a culture of respect and empathy. MaSwati, your lives and well-being are more important than any political ideology. Distance yourselves from the political tension and let’s build a brighter and more peaceful future together.
