MINISTER, INCREASE SOCIAL GRANTS THIS YEAR

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,
As a concerned citizen and advocate for social welfare, I am writing to emphasise the importance of incorporating substantial funding for social grants in the upcoming national budget. I urge the Minister for Finance Neal Rijkenberg to please think about this. To pay E500 per month to the elderly is pathetic. The current socio-economic challenges facing our country necessitate a robust and thoughtful approach to budgeting that prioritises the welfare of our most vulnerable citizens, such as the elderly, disabled persons and the youth. Social grants play a pivotal role in alleviating poverty and providing financial support to those in need. They serve as a lifeline for millions of individuals and families who are struggling to meet their basic needs, including food, health care and education.

Challenging

In recent years, the economic landscape has been increasingly challenging, with rising unemployment rates, inflation and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this context, social grants are not merely a form of assistance; they are an essential investment in the future of our nation. By providing financial support to those who are unemployed, elderly, disabled or caring for dependents, social grants contribute to the overall stability of our society.

Beneficiaries

They enable beneficiaries to afford necessities and participate in the economy, fostering a sense of dignity and self-worth. Moreover, social grants can stimulate local economies by increasing purchasing power, which in turn supports businesses and creates jobs. Eswatini continues to grapple with high levels of inequality, which have been exacerbated by the economic fallout from the pandemic. The disparities in income and access to opportunities create an urgent need for targeted interventions. By allocating sufficient resources to social grants, government can help bridge the gap between different socio-economic groups, allowing for a more balanced and equitable society. Furthermore, increased social grants can contribute to the empowerment of marginalised groups, particularly women and children.

Many single-parent households rely on social grants for their survival. By ensuring that these grants are not only maintained, but also increased to reflect the rising cost of living, government can help break the cycle of poverty that affects generations. While there may be concerns about the sustainability of social grant programmes, it is crucial to recognise that investing in social welfare is an investment in human capital. Research has shown that societies that prioritise social welfare tend to experience greater economic growth and stability in the long run. By allocating funds to social grants, government is not only addressing immediate needs, but also fostering a healthier, more productive population. In crafting the budget, I urge you to consider the voices of those directly affected by these policies. Engaging with communities, civil society organisations, and advocacy groups can provide valuable insights into the specific needs of vulnerable populations.

This collaborative approach will ensure that the budget reflects the realities of everyday life for many in Eswatini In conclusion, I implore you to prioritise social grants in the upcoming budget to address the pressing needs of our society. By doing so, you will be demonstrating a commitment to social justice, equality and the well-being of all citizens. A well-thought-out budget that includes adequate funding for social grants will not only alleviate immediate hardships, but also contribute to the long-term stability and growth of our nation. I trust that you will consider the importance of investing in the welfare of our citizens as you prepare the national budget. Together, we can build a more equitable and prosperous future for all.
