ASSASSINATION THREATS CAUSE FEAR
Sir,
EmaSwati are reeling in fear as an assassination group, known as the Swaziland International Solidarity Forces, has issued death threats against its founders who are prominent political leaders. The group has a mission to eliminate those loyal to the current system of governance and those suspected of not supporting their fight against the leadership. On January 19, 2025, the Swaziland International Solidarity Forces issued a chilling death threat against its own founders, accusing them of seeking money from donors for personal gain.
The group warned that they continue enjoying life of luxury in foreign countries, while pretending to be in exile. Considering previous death threats and intimidation, which resulted in the deaths of many people, including state security officers, the situation has become increasingly volatile, with the assassination group’s recent threat, casting a dark shadow over the lives of political leaders and citizens alike. The recent events have sparked widespread fear and concern, particularly because the then Human Rights lawyer Thulani Rudolf Maseko was brutally murdered on January 21, 2023. Maseko, who was part of the so-called struggle, was shot dead in the presence of his family by the assassination group, accused of embezzling donor funding for personal gain.
Fear
For many emaSwati, the situation is increasingly dire. “As someone who calls Eswatini home, I am engulfed with fear in the land of my forefathers, “ said one fearful citizen.
The death threats have created a climate of fear, and it is unclear what the future holds for our country. The international community is urged to take notice of the situation and understand the danger placed by the assassination group in the lives of emaSwati. It is imperative that efforts are made to bring about peace, stability and justice to the country, and to hold those responsible for the tensions accountable. In the meantime, citizens of Eswatini are left to wonder what the future holds, as they live in fear of the next attack or death threat.
