YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT NEEDS COMPLEX SOLUTIONS

The issue of youth unemployment in Eswatini is very complicated and needs complex solutions.  While many factors contribute to this crisis, including economic stagnation and the lack of investment, we must also address the role of retirement ages and the choices young people make regarding their education and career paths. Currently, many individuals remain in their positions well beyond the typical retirement age. While experience is valuable and definitely needed, this can block opportunities for younger graduates who are eager to enter the workforce.

Benefitting

A phased approach to retirement, perhaps offering part-time or consultancy roles for older workers could create space for new talent, while still benefitting from their expertise. Times are changing and a new generation of graduates is ready to take over and give up-to-date input concerning Eswatini. A national conversation about reasonable retirement ages is crucial for creating a more dynamic job market. Furthermore, we need to address the mismatch between the skills graduates possess and the needs of the Eswatini economy.
Too many young people pursue degrees in fields with limited job prospects, leading to frustration and unemployment. While passion is important, it must be balanced with practicality.

Guidance

We need better career guidance in schools, steering pupils towards viable pathways. For example, instead of focusing solely on traditional academic fields, learners should be encouraged to explore vocational training in areas like renewable energy technology, a growing sector with significant potential in Eswatini. The burgeoning tech industry also offers opportunities for skilled programmers, web developers and digital marketers. Agriculture, a cornerstone of our economy, needs young, innovative minds trained in modern farming techniques and agribusiness management as the King has called for us a country to achieve food sovereignty. If we focus on this now, we could have the King’s vision realised in just a few years. These are just a few examples of sectors with the potential for growth and job creation.

Development

Ultimately, tackling youth unemployment requires a collaborative effort. Government, businesses, educational institutions and young people themselves, must work together to create a system that promotes skills development, entrepreneurship and a more fluid job market. Re-evaluating retirement policies and encouraging strategic career choices are critical steps towards a more prosperous future for Eswatini’s youth.
