A CALL FOR GREENER SPACES

Sir,
As a resident of Eswatini, I deeply appreciate the natural beauty our kingdom possesses. However, a stark comparison with developed nations like the United Kingdom (UK) and other European Union countries (EU) reveals a significant gap in the quality and availability of public spaces, particularly parks and outdoor gyms. This disparity raises concerns about our government’s priorities and the overall well-being of our citizens. In many first world countries, governments prioritise the creation and maintenance of high-end recreational facilities. These spaces are not merely afterthoughts; they are integral to urban planning and community development.

Recognise

They boast state-of-the-art equipment in outdoor gyms, landscaped gardens and a wide range of amenities catering to diverse age groups and interests. These nations understand that access to leisure and outdoor spaces is not a luxury, but a fundamental component of a healthy and happy society. They recognise the positive impact on physical and mental health, community building and even economic development. Here in Eswatini, our parks often lack even basic amenities.

Playgrounds may be dilapidated, benches broken and lighting inadequate. Outdoor gyms, when available, are often poorly maintained with outdated equipment, a far cry from the modern facilities seen elsewhere. This stark contrast raises questions about our government’s commitment to its people. Do we truly value the well-being of our citizens? Are we content to lag behind other nations in providing these essential resources?

Relaxation

Furthermore, the lack of public seating areas in our malls is a glaring issue. In a society where social interaction is highly valued, this absence discourages people from lingering and enjoying public spaces. It sends a message that these spaces are primarily for commercial transactions, not for community building and relaxation. This commercial focus undermines the potential for malls to become vibrant hubs for social connection. Beyond functionality, aesthetics play a crucial role in how a nation is perceived, both internally and externally. First world countries understand the importance of creating visually appealing and well-maintained public spaces.

These spaces contribute to a sense of national pride and enhance the overall quality of life. Eswatini should strive to create public spaces that are not only functional but also beautiful and inviting. It’s time our government recognises the importance of investing in public spaces. Let us learn from nations that understand the vital link between leisure, outdoor access and national happiness. By providing well-maintained parks, modern outdoor gyms, comfortable public seating and aesthetically pleasing environments, we can create a more vibrant, inclusive and prosperous society for all emaSwati. Let us prioritise the well-being of our citizens and create a nation where everyone has access to quality public spaces.
