ESWATINI’S ECONOMIC STRUGGLE: THE NEED FOR LEADERSHIP

Sir,
The recent withdrawal of USAID funding from Eswatini casts a long shadow over the nation, particularly given the already significant economic hardships faced by so many emaSwati. Although this withdrawal brings to light critical concerns about leadership and budget allocation, its impact resonates far beyond simple financial implications.  It significantly exacerbates the already precarious situation surrounding access to essential ‘third spaces,’ those vital areas outside of home and work where community is built and individual well-being is nurtured, a topic that is making  the rounds on American TikTok.

Population

For a large portion of the population, struggling daily to put food on the table and keep a roof overhead, leisure time and social connection have become unaffordable luxuries.  The reality is that most third spaces, whether they be malls and restaurants, sports centres, running and hiking clubs or even parks, often require some form of payment, whether that’s time or money.  In a nation where many families are living hand-to-mouth, these costs are simply too much.

The removal of USAID funding only tightens the economic noose on emaSwati, making access to these essential spaces even more difficult, if not impossible. Without these third spaces, emaSwati lose vital opportunities for relaxation, stress relief and community building. They lose the chance to connect with others, share experiences and find support in times of hardship. We saw when a mother appealled to the public through the newspaper for help with her child’s school fees.

Isolation

The absence of these spaces can lead to increased social isolation, mental health challenges and a weakening of the social fabric that binds communities together. When individuals are solely focused on survival – working relentlessly and then retreating to their homes to rest for the next day’s struggle – there is little room for anything else. This constant cycle of work and rest, without the balance provided by third spaces, can have devastating consequences for both individual and societal well-being.

Withdrawal

While the withdrawal of USAID funding undeniably exposes a lack of effective leadership and  responsible budget management, it also presents a crucial opportunity. It is a chance for African leaders, not just in Eswatini but across the continent, to rise above the narratives of corruption and mismanagement that have plagued the region for far too long. This is a moment to demonstrate genuine leadership by transparently and effectively addressing the root causes of economic hardship and prioritising the needs of the people.  It is a time to move beyond reliance on external aid and to build sustainable, self-reliant economies that benefit all citizens. The challenge is undeniably significant.  Rebuilding trust, fostering economic growth and creating a more equitable society will require vision, commitment and a willingness to put the needs of the nation above personal gain.

Rewards

However, the potential rewards for a nation united in purpose are immense.  By investing in education, creating job opportunities and supporting local businesses, leaders can empower their citizens and build a stronger, more resilient future.  Furthermore, by prioritising social programmes and investing in community infrastructure, including accessible and affordable third spaces, they can foster a sense of belonging and promote social cohesion.

The removal of USAID funding should not be viewed as a setback, but rather as a catalyst for change.  It is a call to action for African leaders to step up and prove the naysayers wrong. It is a chance to demonstrate that they are capable of leading with integrity, transparency and a genuine commitment to the well-being of their people.  The time for action is now.  The future of Eswatini and indeed the future of the continent, depends on it.
