CALL FOR ACCOUNTABILITY: RECLAIMING PROMISE OF ESWATINI

Dear Madam,
As a citizen of Eswatini, I write to express my deep concern and growing disillusionment with the current state of affairs in our kingdom. We are a nation blessed with natural beauty and a rich cultural heritage, yet we find ourselves grappling with persistent challenges that threaten to erode the very fabric of our society. The time for polite acquiescence is over; we must demand accountability and a renewed commitment to the principles of good governance, transparency and justice. For too long, we have witnessed a widening chasm between the promises made by those in power and the lived realities of ordinary emaSwati. While we are told of progress and development, many of us struggle with rising unemployment, inadequate healthcare and a crumbling education system.

Prosperity

Our young people, the future of this nation, are increasingly disillusioned, their dreams stifled by a lack of opportunity and a sense of hopelessness. How can we expect them to contribute to the growth and prosperity of Eswatini when their potential is systematically undermined? The issue of corruption remains a cancer eating away at the heart of our institutions. Stories of misappropriated funds, nepotism and abuse of power are rife, eroding public trust and undermining our collective efforts to build a better future. This culture of impunity must end. We need robust mechanisms in place to ensure that those who engage in corrupt practices are held accountable and brought to justice, regardless of their position or influence.

Furthermore, we need to foster a culture of transparency, where information is readily accessible to the public, allowing citizens to scrutinise the actions of their government and demand responsible stewardship of public resources. The recent socio-political unrest served as a stark reminder of the simmering frustrations that have long been brewing beneath the surface. The voices of the people, demanding change and a greater say in the governance of their country, cannot be ignored.

While dialogue and peaceful protest are essential tools for a healthy democracy, they must be met with a genuine willingness to listen and address the legitimate concerns of the citizenry. Repression and violence only serve to deepen divisions and exacerbate tensions. We, the citizens of Eswatini, are not asking for much. We are simply demanding what is rightfully ours: A government that is accountable to its people, a justice system that is fair and impartial and an economy that provides opportunities for all. We want to live in a society where our voices are heard, our rights are respected and our potential is nurtured. We want to reclaim the promise of Eswatini, a promise of peace, prosperity and justice for all.

Mindset

This requires a fundamental shift in mindset, a move away from the status quo and towards a more inclusive and participatory form of governance. It requires a commitment from our leaders to prioritise the needs of the people over personal gain and to embrace transparency and accountability as guiding principles. It also requires a renewed sense of civic responsibility from each of us, a willingness to engage in constructive dialogue, to hold our leaders accountable and to contribute to the building of a better Eswatini. Let us not allow our nation to drift further into the abyss of despair. Let us rise up and demand the change that we so desperately need. Let us work together, as emaSwati, to build a future where every citizen can thrive, where justice prevails and where the promise of Eswatini is finally realised. The time for action is now.
