Sir,

Enhancing social protection programmes

Another key highlight of the minister’s budget speech is the increased focus on social protection programmes. For many emaSwati, particularly the elderly, the disabled and low-income households, social grants are a lifeline. These grants provide a crucial safety net for vulnerable populations, helping to alleviate poverty and ensure basic sustenance. The budget outlines plans to increase funding for social grants, particularly for the elderly, who often face economic hardship after retirement. Government has also committed to expanding access to social grants for other vulnerable groups, including orphans and persons with disabilities. This is an important move, as it acknowledges the need to support those who are unable to fully participate in the labour market and ensures that they have access to essential services and support.

Infrastructure development and job creation

Eswatini’s infrastructure has long been in need of modernisation and expansion. Roads, public transport systems, electricity and water supply systems are all critical to the nation’s development. In his budget speech, Rijkenberg highlighted government’s intention to significantly invest in infrastructure development, particularly in rural areas where infrastructure is often lacking. The allocation for infrastructure projects aims to address these deficits by improving transportation networks, expanding electricity access and improving water supply systems.

These investments will not only improve the quality of life for emaSwati but will also create thousands of jobs, providing much-needed employment opportunities in construction and related sectors. Additionally, government is committed to investing in renewable energy projects, such as solar and wind energy, to provide sustainable and affordable energy sources.
This aligns with global trends toward greener energy and will help Eswatini reduce its reliance on imported fossil fuels, which are subject to price volatility.

Strengthening the agricultural sector

Agriculture remains a cornerstone of Eswatini’s economy, with a significant portion of the population relying on farming for their livelihood. Rijkenberg’s budget speech recognises the importance of agriculture and outlines measures to support and strengthen the sector. The budget allocates funding for agricultural modernisation, including the provision of better seeds, fertilisers and equipment for farmers. Government also plans to increase support for smallholder farmers, particularly women and young people, who face challenges in accessing financing and markets. By supporting the agricultural sector, government hopes to reduce the country’s dependence on food imports, increase food security and improve the livelihoods of rural communities.

This initiative will not only contribute to economic growth but will also help to address food insecurity, a critical issue for many EmaSwati. For many emaSwati, this budget provides hope and reassurance that government is committed to addressing the nation’s most pressing issues. While challenges remain, the budget offers a clear and hopeful path forward, one that focuses on the well-being of the people and the long-term prosperity of the nation. The optimism generated by the speech is a testament to the belief that Eswatini is moving in the right direction, and that with determination and collective effort, the nation can overcome its challenges and achieve lasting progress.
