RESPECT ROYAL ESWATINI POLICE SERVICE

 Sir,
In any society, law enforcement officers play a vital role in ensuring peace, order and the safety of citizens. The Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) serves as the backbone of law and order, tirelessly working to maintain the well-being of the emaSwati people. However, the increasing tendency to slander and undermine the reputation of our police officers on social media is troubling and must be addressed. As a society, we need to learn to respect and appreciate their efforts, as they too deserve the same level of respect that we expect in our workplaces. The primary duty of the police officers is to safeguard the peace, protect lives and uphold the rule of law.

They patrol our communities, respond to emergencies, investigate crimes and ensure that justice is served. Without the tireless work of the men and women in blue, there would be a significant void in maintaining public safety. While police officers are entrusted with enforcing the law and keeping order, they are also human beings with families, aspirations and emotions. They deserve to be treated with dignity and respect for the essential services they provide, just like any other professional in their line of work. The reality is that without their dedication, our country would face significant challenges in maintaining law and order.

Slander

Unfortunately, some members of society have taken to social media platforms to slander the reputation of our police officers, accusing them of misconduct and even threatening their safety. These actions not only tarnish the image of REPS, but also undermine their authority and effectiveness. When police officers are publicly ridiculed or disparaged, it can cause a loss of morale, making their jobs even more challenging. It is essential to understand that the police cannot reprimand individuals without cause. If a police officer approaches you, it is because your actions have warranted their attention.

Protect

Whether it be for breaking the law or creating a disturbance, the police act within their authority to protect the public and maintain order. In such moments, we should not react with hostility or disrespect. Instead, we must recognise the responsibility of the police to ensure public safety and cooperate with their efforts. The most heartbreaking consequence of slandering police officers on social media is the emotional toll it takes on their families, especially their children. Imagine the hurt and distress that children experience when they see their parents, who are dedicated to serving the community, being ridiculed or threatened online.

These children, who look up to their parents as role models and sources of protection, may be confused or distressed by the public attacks on their loved ones. We must take a moment to step into the shoes of these children and consider the emotional impact such public vilification has on them. No child should have to endure the humiliation of seeing their parent’s reputation tarnished for simply doing their job. Instead of perpetuating negativity, we should focus on promoting respect, kindness and understanding.

Acccountable

As citizens, we must also hold ourselves accountable for our actions. If we make a mistake or find ourselves in a situation that requires police intervention, we must be willing to accept responsibility and learn from it. No one is above the law, and by acknowledging when we are wrong, we can foster a society where respect and accountability thrive. We need to remember that the police are not our enemies. They are individuals who work tirelessly to keep us safe. When they do their job, whether it’s stopping a crime or ensuring public order, they should be respected, not vilified. Slandering their names only serves to weaken the work they do and jeopardise the safety of everyone in the country.

Respect

In conclusion, we must learn to respect the police officers for the essential work they do in ensuring our safety and well-being. As citizens, it is our responsibility to support and acknowledge their efforts. Instead of tarnishing their reputation on social media, let us work together to foster mutual respect, understanding and accountability. We must also consider the emotional toll such public attacks have on their families and children. Ultimately, it is crucial to realise that respect for law enforcement is not only a reflection of our values but also a fundamental part of maintaining peace and order in Eswatini.
