Gospel music is now about money, not the Word

Sir,

I have since noted that Gospel music is now more of a career than a calling to preach the good news to all through music.

Our gospel artists now rely too much on the art part, instead of striving to live what they sing about. All they are saying is "do as I say, not as I do."

Gone are the days when we had devoted Christians in the Gospel music industry. Here, I’m talking about the following groups: the Swazi Gospel Singers, the Manzini Crusade, Christ for all, Swazi Voice of Praise and many others who sang gospel with love, passion and meaning.

What is now happening in the Gospel music scene is simply unacceptable. Some of these artists are even bold and arrogant enough to publicly declare that Swaziland is not a suitable ‘market’ for their music. So, all they see kitsi is a market, not a congregation that is hungry for the word of the Almighty, hence they misbehave in public.

Gospel artists nowadays allegedly use muti to gain popularity and to up their sales.

They also use the same stuff kuvala lamanye ema artists. Some allegedly go to the extent of bribing radiomen and radio ladies to play their music on a daily basis. No wonder we have what we call big groups and smaller groups and those who are simply not known.

The big groups are those that are frequently played on air and they are played by specific people. Smaller groups are those groups that rarely make it to the airwaves. The others are those that are simply forgotten. This, then, makes it easy for one to believe allegations of bribery.

Not only do gospel musicians attempt to ‘bewitch’ and sabotage each other on air, they allegedly go to the extent of using muti to affect the sound system when a competitor is on stage, or even allegedly scratch the person’s backup CD to make him look bad in the eyes of the public, khona atobhimba.

The list goes on and my major question is: What is happening in Gospel music?

Bacul’igospel, kodwa abaphil’igospel! Ngiyabonga mine, I rest my case.

Mthamo, Manzini
