WE NEED NATIONAL DISCUSSION ON CELLPHONE RADIATION
Sir,
Please allow me space to express my views in what has become a ‘national agenda’ in your widely read newspaper, regarding MTN Swaziland and the Torsions gadgets.
I think MTN Swaziland is making profits at our peril as a nation by denying that mobile phone radiation is real.
In as far as my memory serves me right, MTN Swaziland does not manufacture mobile phones but simply provides a service that requires one to own a mobile phone. Furthermore, MTN Swaziland does not test those mobile phones we buy from Asians and other outlets.
Radiation
The mobile phone industry in the country is open to anyone, anywhere, without any constraints. I think mobile phones do cause radiation – however, it is to an extent we do not know.
This, therefore, compels the government, through the Health ministry, to embark on serious research on this issue.
If needs be, both companies involved in this issue must be brought on board to explain whatever points they have for or against mobile phone radiation.
Sweating
In addition to that, different media forums should be used to reach the nation as using the print media covers only a small margin of the population. How about having both companies sweating it out on SBIS, Swazi TV and other widely used communication forums in Swaziland? This is because it is believed there is no spark without fire and, as a nation, we must be given relevant and accurate information.
Lastly, if cellphone radiation is harmful and a need to combat it is essential, let our standards authorities screen Torsions Swaziland to see if it is worth the price or if it is just a novice aiming at reaping our money through using a sensitive issue.
