THUGS CHARGING FOR USE OF OVERHEAD BRIDGES

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

May I take this opportunity to express my disappointment following the bad tendency by some people to charge for crossing overhead bridges.
As far as I know, overhead bridges were meant for people to travel on them instead of crossing the highways which are at times dangerous

because of fast moving vehicles. In short, they are for safety purposes. Unfortunately, there are people who are doing barbaric acts by hijacking the overhead crossings, especially in the afternoon hours.

What is it that we are supposed to do now? We try to cross the roads and we are arrested because it is against the law; we try to cross again and and we are hit by the fast moving cars. It’s a ruthless act, really!

The offenders are now making some people fear the overhead bridges and thus they are resorting to crossing the roads in an unsafe way. May I therefore ask the police and the community police to try by every means to curb this barbaric act. You find that most people are going to their workplaces or coming from there and even school-going children are victims.

I hope that with the police and community police working hand-in-hand, this will come to a stop because we will lose our friends and relatives in a silly way just because of people who do not want to think about wise ways of making some money. The police campaign with the slogan ‘Sivutsa bhe!’, which started last year with full force, should prove it’s presence to these people who are letting the country down.

Mangaliso Smanga Shongwe, Gundvwini, Emvongotsini

Dear Mangaliso,

It is illegal to charge for entry and right-of-way on public roads and paths. The next time this happens in front of you, you need to call the police immediately so they can gently explain to these thugs that every person has the right to use the overhead bridges free of charge. They belong to the government, not to individuals, and as you point out, this behaviour is extremely dangerous and will result in deaths if not stopped right away.
