850 TO BE LAID OFF AT TEX RAY SUBSIDIARY
MATSAPHA – Yet another firm under the Tex Ray Group of Companies is set to lay off all its 850 workers for a period of almost three weeks.
This is contained in a letter dated March 20, 2015, which was given to Kasumi Apparels Swaziland (PTY) Ltd workers by the company’s management and is also in this publication’s possession.
The letter, which is titled: Notice of Lay-Offs, stated that it was with deep regret that the company had to notify all its employees in the factory that due to circumstances beyond its control, it would be forced to lay off all of them.
The lay-offs are in terms of Regulation 17 (1) and (3)(a) of the Regulation of Wages (Textile and Apparel Industry) Order, 2014. The lay-offs would be carried out in two groups.
“The major cause for the lay-offs is due to a failure by the company in securing certain orders, which are very crucial and critical to its continued operations. It is anticipated that all employees in the factory will be affected by the lay-offs,” reads part of the letter. The company said the lay-offs should be for a period of 14 working days, which is about three weeks, commencing on April 7, 2015 and ending on April 27, 2015 inclusive.
This meant that the last day of work would be April 2, 2015 and employees would resume work on April 28, 2015. The holidays within the lay-offs period; Good Friday, Easter Monday and the King’s Birthday would not be counted as part of the lay-off but the company would pay the workers for the days.
