MANZINI – About 2 000 people from SADC yesterday marched around the city of Manzini demanding that Swaziland be democratised by unbanning political parties.

This demand is among others which are contained in a draft declaration which was paraded during the march.
The demands and recommendations were compiled during the three-day long 2016 Southern African Development Community (SADC) People’s Summit, which was held at Bosco Skills Centre.

The summit was organised by the Southern African People’s Solidarity Network (SAPSN) in partnership with Swaziland Economic Justice Network (SEJN) and the Swaziland United Democratic Front (SUDF).

Allowing

They said the country’s leadership should respect the rule of law and human rights as it assumes chairpersonship of the SADC, starting by allowing political parties in the country. The Summit was attended by members of different groups from the 14 SADC member States.
Participating groups included social movements, trade unions, economic justice and human rights representatives. Others were environmental networks, NGOs, individual activists together with women and youth collectives, among others.

Further, the organisations further called upon SADC to make sure the report that was issued by the organisation’s commission of enquiry after the murdering of Lesotho former Army Commander Lieutenant General Maaparankoe Mahao and the detention of several soldiers.
They also demanded that the organisation should make sure that the detained soldiers of Lesotho were released and ensure that no one was above the law in the mountain kingdom to strengthen democracy.
