MANZINI – Violent scenes were witnessed yesterday when public transport drivers and conductors abandoned their duties to protest against a newly-transferred traffic police officer.

The kombi drivers and conductors said they were infuriated by the sudden increase of court summons allegedly issued by the new Malkerns Police Station Traffic In-Charge, Rambo Nhlengetfwa, who has just been transferred from the Mafutseni Police Station.

As a result, movement along the Luyengo-Malkerns Public Road came to a standstill yesterday as the public transport workers placed rocks on the road, making it inaccessible.

Most commuters from the area found themselves stranded for the better part of the day.
The public transport workers further forced some of their colleagues who were ferrying passengers to drop them off in the middle of the road.
The protesting workers were carrying sticks and bricks, threatening to assault anyone who did not heed to their demands.

Some passengers were forced to alight from the blocked public transport vehicles and walk, either home or to work.
In one instance, when Phakama Bus Service approached, full of passengers, the protesting workers approached it carrying sticks and placed huge bricks on the roadway.

The bus’s door was forcefully opened and they ordered passengers to alight.
“Kusho bani kutsi layisha wena’- loosely translated, ‘who said you should ferry passengers, we will stop everyone who is not compliant and order the passengers out,” one of them was heard shouting.
