DON’T CLOSE SCHOOLS - EDUCATION MINISTER
MBABANE – Do not shut down schools! This is the directive that was communicated by the Minister of Education and Training, Phineas Magagula, in response to the uncertainty that has been caused by reports of tropical Cyclone Dineo, which could hit certain parts of the country.
Many parents and teachers alike have been sent to panic mode and were unsure of the next move as reports from the Swaziland Meteorological Services, Department suggest that some areas of the kingdom will be affected by the tropical cyclone that has already hit Mozambique and its repercussions were already being felt in various parts of neighbouring South Africa.
In an interview with the minister last evening, he minced no words and emphatically stated that all pupils were expected to be at school for the next two days.
“Pupils are going to school tomorrow (today). Schools will continue as usual,” he said.
He advised against planting a sense of panic among the pupils, further stating that in the past, there were reports of extreme weather patterns but schools continued as usual.
“Should there be a big problem (during the course of the day), Cabinet ministers will meet and a decision will be taken. Otherwise for now, people should not die before the actual death, so schools continue as usual,” he explained. Reports reaching this publication yesterday were to the effect that some schools, especially in areas identified as tropical Cyclone Dineo hot spots, had already informed pupils not to attend classes from today and tomorrow. This was part of the preventative measures taken by the school’s head teachers. Letters were sent with the pupils to give to their parents or guardians regarding the latest developments.
