MAKHOSINI – A high demand for embalming chemical, which is one of the ingredients allegedly used by drug peddlers in manufacturing highly addictive drugs, is suspected to be behind the seizure of the substance on Monday.

The powder, which is alleged to fetch about E400 000 per kilogrammes on the black market, was confiscated from three men who were crossing into the kingdom, from South Africa.

The bust occurred along the borderline at Makhosini area shortly before 6pm.
Soldiers manning the borderline were alerted to three suspicious men who were trying to cross over into the country and acted swiftly to capture them.

The men were interviewed and later taken to the police.
Confirming the apprehension of the trio, Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF) Public Relations Officer (PRO) Lieutenant Colonel Madoda Mkhatshwa, identified the suspects as a South African national, who was in the company of two locals.

He said they were caught by members of the USDF on Monday evening while trying to gain entry into the country through illegal means.
“The time was around 5:45pm when our members tried to control the three. They were questioned and later handed over to the police who are continuing with their investigation,” said Mkhatshwa.

He said the army personnel found the men with about 1kg of the substance which was suspected to be embalming chemical.
Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Khulani Mamba said the suspects were kept in police custody, pending further investigations.
