SITEKI – Even though part of his duties is to clamp down crime, a police officer is being questioned by his colleagues on allegations that he committed robberies.

This is the story of a police officer, who has been fingered as a prime suspect, responsible for a string of armed robberies that have taken place in one of the rural communities around the Lubombo region.
The officer in question holds the rank of constable but his name and the station where he is based will not be revealed because he has not yet been charged.
The officer has been accused of being responsible for several robberies since arriving in the area about a year ago, to serve at the local police station.

According to residents, the officer allegedly uses his service pistol to carry out the robberies and sometimes uses other weapons like knives to induce submission from his victims.
Residents said at first, they thought it was the normal criminals who were responsible for the string of robberies but all fingers soon pointed to the officer after he was allegedly caught red-handed robbing a woman at her homestead.
“He (officer) attacked the woman with a knife and demanded money.

Fortunately for the woman, some relatives arrived and the officer fled.
“However, he fled after he had been identified by some of the woman’s relatives,” said a source.
Following this incident, word soon spread around the community that it was the officer who was allegedly responsible for the armed robberies.
Residents, together with community leaders, met to discuss the matter and a resolution was taken to report the matter to the police.

However, according to the area’s Member of Parliament, police took the matter lightly and did not launch formal investigations.
Last week, residents threatened to take the law into their own hands if the officer was not formally charged.
Some residents are said to have threatened to protest at the police station.

This is said to have prompted the police to question their colleague about the allegations levelled against him.
