RFM STAFF CAUGHT ON CCTV STEALING E100 000 DRUGS
MANZINI – Staff members at the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital have been caught on CCTV cameras stealing a consignment of a highly regulated drug.
The drug, Pethidine, is a strong painkiller that has the components of heroin and cocaine and it is mostly used in the theatre.
The stolen drugs amount to over E100 000.
In 2014, containers of Anti Retro Viral drugs, Atripla, intended for 388 patients living with HIV, were stolen at the same hospital.
The recent news of the Pethidine theft have come as a shock as our sister publication, the Times Sunday reported that the same hospital had allegedly run out of certain drugs.
The issue of the shortages of drugs within health institutions, especially RFM Hospital, was solely blamed on government’s cash-flow challenges, which have resulted in public health facilities encountering the acute shortage of pharmaceutical drugs.
RFM Hospital was counted as one of the health institutions seriously affected.
This publication yesterday gathered that the safe where the stolen drugs had been kept was found empty, and with all the boxes containing them missing.
The safe is located within the hospital pharmacy and its keys are allegedly kept by one of the senior employees.
The incident is said to have occurred three weeks ago.
The hospital was informed of the theft after it was gathered that the said drugs had disappeared in large quantities. An immediate meeting was held by the administration and a decision was made that the Royal Swaziland Police (RSP) be involved.
Yesterday, reliable sources revealed that there were internal hearings held at the hospital, which allegedly involved the police.
This was after footages of the incident were seen by both the administration and the RSP members.
