MBABANE – The nation has been given five months to comply with the Swaziland Television Authority Act of 1983 to pay their TV licences or face arrest.

According to the Act, if you fail to comply you are reported to the police or Director of Public Prosecution’s (DPP) office and subsequently get arrested.
If found guilty, you face six months imprisonment or a fine of E500.

Sidumo Mdladla, who is leading the TV licence team said his lawfirm, SV Mdladla and Associates in partnership with DataNet, have been appointed by the Swaziland Television Authority (STVA) Board to collect the fees from TV set owners.

Mdladla said about 80 per cent of Swazis were owners of television sets in the country and did not pay their licences, which made it very difficult for the television station to produce quality content.

Mdladla said STVA’s main source of income was from the payment of TV licences, which was why the board and management had decided to strengthen that department. Mdladla said paying a TV licence only cost E15 a month and E180 annually, which when paid at once, a client gets E40 rebate.

“We encourage Swazis to come forward and pay their TV licences because if they fail to comply they will have to face the long arm of the law,” Mdladla said.
According to Mdladla, the project was not only about collecting the licence fees, but creating a solid management collecting system to enhance the functions of the television station.
