MBABANE – A maid has reported her boss, a former senator, to the police for allegedly threatening her with a knife following a misunderstanding.

The incident is said to have happened last Friday where the former senator lives with his family in the outskirts of the capital city.
The maid, who is widowed, claims to have been attacked by her boss after he had come home for lunch.

The misunderstanding started after the maid was asked to study the load shedding schedule issued by the Swaziland Electricity Company (SEC).
Her boss is said to have repeatedly asked her if she knew the schedule well and she responded to the affirmative.
However, the two later had a disagreement regarding the schedule to the point that harsh words were exchanged.

According to the maid, her boss then started shouting at her and said unpalatable words and told her to leave the homestead.
Before that, she alleged that he went for a knife in the kitchen and threatened her with it.
She further made other allegations which cannot be printed because they could not be verified.

“I normally go to the main house at 7am to prepare his breakfast with the madam. In the four months that I have been working for them, my male boss comes home every day for lunch. I first give him fruits while I warm up the food.
On the Friday, he came and harshly asked me why I was sitting outside when he had said I should come to him. He then took out a newspaper and asked me about the schedule and I told him that I knew it by heart.

At that time he started insulting me before he went for the knife in the dish drying rack. We struggled in the kitchen and I ran to the door, far from him. When he noted that I was overpowering him, he told me to leave his house. I went to get my bag in the garage where I keep it and I left his keys with him. While outside the gate, I called his wife and informed her what had happened,” the woman alleged.

The maid said she then went to the police station immediately after the phone call and reported the matter.
The following day on the Saturday, the former senator allegedly called her and told her to return to work but she did not.
When reached for comment, the former senator expressed shock over the allegations and further denied them.

He alleged that the woman was stubborn and he had tried to reason with her on the Friday but she answered back at him in a rude manner which he could not stand since he was in his own house.
“This is bad luck for me. Why would I want to hurt that woman? I only pay wages for the helper at the end of the month. Our house is by the road and if indeed I was attacking her, why didn’t she scream and attract attention from people outside the yard?

“I always have lunch at home then rest before going back to work. She has been working for us for so many months so why would I try such with her now? This is unbelievable. Why would I use a knife when threatening a woman? I have a licensed gun in my house which I would use if I felt the need to defend myself. I did not fire that woman on the day but I told her to go and come back when my wife is home so she could talk to her,” he said.
When the wife was called she asked not to comment on the matter and referred all questions to her husband.

Superintendent Khulani Mamba, the Chief Police Information and Communications Officer confirmed that they have opened a case at the Mbabane Police Station of assault common.
“She came to the station on Friday and wrote a statement where she alleged that she had been threatened with a knife by her boss,” Mamba said. The former senator was called to the police station this week where he stated his side of the story.
He has not been charged, as such, his name has been omitted.
