MHLUME – The cold night did not deter Mananga Sugar Packers employees from staging a picket at around 2am.

Police had to be called during the night yesterday when the striking employees staged a picket right at the entrance to the company.
The workers reportedly sang, chanted slogans and further brandished placards much to the surprise of security guards, who are said to have not been expecting picketing to take place in the middle of a very cold night.

The picketing reportedly lasted for about two hours before the workers dispersed following the arrival of the police, who had been called to protect the company’s property.

There was no violence reported during the picketing and the police confirmed the striking workers did not harass Mhlume Sugar Mill workers who were on night shift.

Despite being an independent company, Mananga Sugar Packers is situated within the premises of Mhlume Sugar Mill, which is owned by the Royal Swaziland Sugar Corporation (RSSC).
According to the workers union, the objective of the ‘midnight picketing’ was to send a message to management that workers were not going to back down on their demands.

“Due to that we are small in numbers, we need different strategies to force managers to give in to our demands,” said Mancoba Dlamini, the Secretary General of the Swaziland Agricultural Plantations and Allied Workers Union (SAPWU).
Acting Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Assistant Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed that police were called during a picket which took place in the early hours of yesterday at Mhlume.
