EXPLOSION AT RSSC COULD COST E25M
MBABANE – The explosion at RSSC might cost around E25 million.
Barely a day after it was reported that some portions of sugar cane fields were burnt, an explosion which will cost truckers E25 million erupted at the Royal Swaziland Sugar Corporation (RSSC) in Simunye.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at around 1.15am where one of the tanks in Plant 2 exploded.
The explosion damaged distillery Plant 2, distillery offices and shattered three truck windscreens with a total cost of E25 million.
According to reports, the incident was reported by a 59-year-old man from Lusoti, who heard a loud bang from the plant. The sound was from the explosion of the PRC Column Product Tank.
The explosion was witnessed by four employees who were a short distance from the danger zone.
There were other employees of the company who inhaled the fumes from the explosion.
None of the employees were injured, but they were sent to Lusoti Clinic for check-ups as a precaution.
The distiller plant was not in operation and had been shut down for 18 hours when the incident took place. The machine was lying idle in order to carry out routine cleaning and maintenance.
RSSC Group Public Affairs Manager Sifiso Nyembe said investigations were underway, to get to the bottom of the probable cause of the explosion.
