MANZINI – A father could be best described as a provider, protector, friend and a caring person, but for 18-year-old *Nomsa, she has been robbed of that description.

This was after being allegedly sexually abused for almost two years by a person she referred to as a father. Worth noting is that the father is alleged to be HIV positive.
After the death of her biological father when she was about a year old, Nomsa looked up to her uncle as the perfect replacement.

As per the Swazi culture, Nomsa referred to her uncle as a father because he was the younger sibling of her late biological father. “After the death of my father, I was taken to live with a certain family in the Shiselweni region. I grew up knowing that this was my family until I was 14 years old,” she said.

Asked about her mother, Nomsa said she has been told different versions by different people. “Some say she died and others say she abandoned me. I really do not know her whereabouts. In fact, I do not know her,” she said.
Relating events leading to the harrowing incident, Nomsa said about two years ago, it was resolved at family level that she should reside with her uncle in Manzini.
That was when trouble started.

Nomsa said the abuse started when she was still in primary school doing Grade VI.
“He would wait for his wife to leave for work before pouncing on me. She usually left at around 10pm. He would also make sure that his daughter who was six years at that time was fast asleep,” she narrated.
With tears streaming down her cheeks, Nomsa said her father would jump into her bed then force himself on her.

She pointed out that in the two years, the perpetrator would sometimes use protection.
After committing the offence, Nomsa said her father would just walk away as if nothing had happened.

“Every time he pounced on me, I would ask myself why my father is doing this to me. The thought of him being my father made it difficult for me to report the abuse to any family member. I had thought they would not believe me,” she said in between sobs.
