KAMJIZA – A grandmother vividly recalls seeing a huge flame and smoke swirling around her burning grandson as she attempted to save his life.

“I’ve never seen something like that in my entire life,” lamented the woman.
The next thing she said was that she found herself gazing helplessly over his charred remains and a burnt wheelchair, all of which confirmed the tragic end of the life of the six-year-old boy with a disabilty.
The child gruesomely met his death when he was burnt beyond recognition after the house he was sleeping in caught fire on Saturday night.
The heart-sinking incident occurred around KaMjiza area, under Mtsambama Constituency, in the outskirts of Hlatikhulu.

Six-year-old Zamokuhle Lukhele, who could neither sit up straight nor walk, was reportedly sleeping inside a room when the fire broke out.
Giving a harrowing account of the events that led to the boy’s tragic death was his grandmother, who identified herself as Make Dlamini. She recalled how the boy’s strange behaviour earlier acted as a prelude to the sad event that was later to unfold at the Lukhele homestead at around 7pm.
The woman said the boy had persistently blocked her several attempts to put him to bed earlier that evening.

“He would simply break into tears the moment I put him down. I just didn’t understand why he was doing that since I had never encountered any problems with him before,” said the elderly woman who was still shocked by what happened. The woman said eventually, the boy fell asleep and she was able to put him in bed.
Make Dlamini said he had just fallen asleep at around 7pm when she decided to go to another house within the compound.

She said she had not taken that long outside but when she returned, she noticed the house where the boy was sleeping engulfed in flames.
The boy remained trapped inside the burning house as she was not able to flee from the blaze due to his condition.
Relatives helplessly watched as the child burnt, with efforts to put out the fire proving to be a tad too late.
