QOMINTABA – There is no reason why a person should see his appointment as a leader of a community as a ticket to show arrogance to the people.

This was a strong warning given to Lavumisa Chief Prince Gasa WaNgwane during his Sibhimbi on Saturday. Addressing the recently sworn-in traditional leader was Indvuna Lomapotapota Mkhabela, who is also Nhlangano King’s Liaison Officer.

What was notable was that the words of guidance from the indvuna came in the backdrop of simmering discontent against the chief’s rule in the chiefdom, which has often resulted in demonstrations staged especially by the youth at the chief’s royal kraal.

He told the chief to be careful when leading people and avoid falling into the pit of arrogance. He said the chief should be approachable by the people he leads, and especially members of his immediate family (the Lavumisa royal family) who, after all, elevated him to the role of chieftaincy.

Mkhabela stressed that the chief was obligated to serve the Lavumisa ruling household, and most importantly, the people of the chiefdom.
He said humility on the part of the chief would ensure a healthy relationship between him and the people of Lavumisa. The staunch traditionalist observed that the demonstration of respect in a chief’s discharge of his duties was imperative.
“You have not been appointed to find yourself as being a better person than others. You should put respect first, just as your forefathers were respectful,” Mkhabela stressed.
He conceded that being appointed to the role of community leader was a huge challenge.
He said in order for a chief to avoid upsetting people, he should listen to what they have to say.
Prince Gasa WaNgwane on Saturday officially assumed the chieftaincy role in the Lavumisa Chiefdom during a traditional ceremony which was attended by traditionalists, high ranking government officials and representatives from the royal family.
