MANZINI – Out of the norm, over 30 pupils almost turned Mvimbeko High School into a maternity camp.

This came about after it transpired that 31 pupils from the school were pregnant.
The number of the pregnant teenagers is said to have been huge for the first time in history this year so much that it raised concerns as to why they were not sent home.

According to a source, when the school authorities were quizzed on this, the response was that they were bound by a directive from the ministry of Education and Training, which stated that pregnant pupils should not be expelled from school.
This resulted in the mammoth statistics of soon-to-be teen mothers roaming the school premises without shame or remorse of their actions.

According to a concerned citizen, this has been ongoing for some time until recently when the pupils were sent home after the school authorities engaged their parents.
In addition, the source said the pupils conceived a little before winter or during the cold season because all along, they were not showing any signs of pregnancy due to that they wore jerseys and a lot of clothes underneath their uniforms.

However, most of them began visible after they resumed school for the third term. The source said the number of pregnant learners at the school excluded those who voluntarily dropped out before they were even noticed by teachers.
“What is puzzling is why the pupils were allowed to continue with classes when they were heavily pregnant because this had negative effects on other scholars who wanted to learn,” wondered one resident, who is also a parent at the school.

Another one chipped in and said it was better now that the expectant pupils were sent home and told to return for their examinations.
“Even though they were not expelled, it is better that they experience pregnancy related sicknesses away from the other children,” she said.
