LOBAMBA – “Reopen the Swaziland Christian University (SCU) on Wednesday (tomorrow)”.

This was the unanimous decision made by Members of Parliament (MP) yesterday as they knocked off late at night while debating the issue. The House was eventually adjourned at 10:15pm. The public gallery was filled to the brim with the students from the institution, whose operations were suspended by government almost a month ago.

Meanwhile, tempers flared as MPs and Cabinet ministers were involved in personality clashes. First to tackle the issue was Ludzeludze MP Bambumuti Sithole who called for the university to open as of yesterday. “There’s taxpayers’ money for 400 students who were paid for by government and 516 who were paid for by the parents,” said Sithole.

He was supported by Mkhiweni MP Gideon Dlamini, who said the students should be in class this morning while government sorted out the issues. Hosea MP Thulani Masuku said it was amazing that the SCU was opened by government. “How did you open the institution when you allege that the lecturers are not qualified?” asked Masuku.

He said some of the students were already in their fourth year. Masuku said presently, workers at the university had not been paid and others had rent to pay and food to buy for their children and families. “Why is government so cruel that they can close down the school within an hour?” the MP asked.

He said the ministry slept on the job and that the minister should immediately go to the radio and make an announcement reopening of the university.
