MALIYADUMA – A family’s fears that something bad might have happened to their son were proven true after his body was found buried in a shallow grave.

This is the body of the student of the Southern Africa Nazarene University (SANU who was reported missing last week. His body was discovered in a decomposed state, buried in a shallow grave. The student, Bafana ‘Magents’ Shiba (22), was last week reported missing to the police by his family. Some of his family members confirmed that they had fears that he could have been killed. This was after an alleged gangster and convict was found driving his vehicle, a VW Golf, which had his house keys, despite that he had claimed Shiba had sold him the car. The same man has been arrested by the police. The man’s arrest comes after a cattle herder, Fana Mkhabela, discovered the student’s decomposed body which had been buried in a shallow grave near a public road at Maliyaduma on Saturday afternoon. Before stumbling upon a group of dogs feeding on what looked like a human hand protruding from the shallow grave, Mkhabela said he had been hit by a foul smell coming from that direction. However, he did not suspect it could be a murdered human being.

“After seeing the pack of dogs, I came closer to get a glimpse of what they were feeding on and saw the hand, which had been cut off. At first, it really looked like a dead animal. I immediately went to one Babe Dlamini and reported that there could be something like an animal buried there. He later gave us a go ahead to call the police after we came to a resolution not to dig the grave before calling the police. The police arrived and we all started digging up,” Mkhabela said. He added that while the one metre shallow grave was dug up with shovels, they all thought it was a goat which had been buried there for ritual purposes. Mkhabela said together with the officers, they continued digging up the grave until they discovered that it was actually a decomposed human body, wrapped in a green striped blanket and tied with electric cables. “After it had been confirmed that it was a body of a man, the decomposed body was placed near the dug shallow grave and more officers, including those from the Scenes of Crimes, were called to take pictures and further record statements,” he said.

Shiba’s neck and throat were allegedly slit and almost beheaded, his back and stomach had stab wounds, which proved that he was hacked with either a bush knife or slasher and further stabbed several times. “His intestines were protruding from the wounds and his right arm was broken. His mouth was completely removed. The young man was gruesomely murdered by people or a person. “I am even experiencing sleepless nights, especially because I discovered his body and was further ordered to dig up the grave by the police,” an emotional Mkhabela said. The SANU second-year Faculty of Education student was killed while he was wearing black shorts, sandals and a black t-shirt.
Information gathered yesterday was that lectures were suspended at the university after  news of Shiba’s death. The administration is said to have confirmed his death to the rest of the students and said they would not comment further as they had not yet met with Shiba’s family on the incident.
