GEGE – Scores of residents have been forced to spend nights elsewhere following a raging storm that blew away roofs at Dvudvusini on Monday night.

Dvudvusini is located in Gege, around the Eric Rosenberg High School precinct. Residents said more than 100 people were affected after gusty winds blew away roofs and destroyed several structures.

Zacheaus Malinga, the area’s Constituency Councillor, said a significant number of the affected people were displaced.
He made an example of 72-year-old Roti Kunene, who alongside his 12-year-old grandson, were forced to seek alternative shelter with compassionate community members.

At the Kunene homestead, Malinga said all structures were destroyed by the heavy storm.
He explained that the storm which brought heavy downpours and strong winds started shortly before 7pm, catching residents off guard.
According to Malinga, large hailstones deluged the area for about 15 to 20 minutes, leaving considerable damage at about 15 homesteads and crop fields.

The violent storm also downed trees and left several homesteads without power.
Malinga said the showers then continued for the entire night, albeit with less intensity.
In the few months since the summer rains started, the community of Dvudvusini, which was also severely affected by the recent drought, had come together and sold some of their livestock in order to purchase farming inputs.
However, the devastating storm engendered a horrible situation, where affected community members are now left with a steeper task of finding building material, in order to ensure they have shelter over their heads.
