MANZINI – If you thought the E24 million worth of cocaine bust was shocking, and then you will find it scandalous that one of the drug dens locally is situated across a police camp.

The well-known house can be found at Zakhele Township, not far from the Zakhele Police Camp which houses over 200 officers. Also, it is about 200 metres from His Majesty’s Correctional Services remand centre.

This is one of many areas around Manzini where it is easy to organise hard core drugs such as cocaine, heroin and rock.
Bolivian cocaine was being sold from E250/gramme, heroin which was sold for E100 while rock, which is a mix of heroin and chalk E50. Found at Makholweni, under the Manzini North Constituency, was a dingy unfenced block of one-room flats, where Tanzanian nationals leased one of the rooms.

The Tanzanian nationals openly sell drugs in this flat. A drive to these flats takes about seven minutes from the Manzini Bus Rank. At the one room flats, a sloop of ‘rock’ and cocaine were readily available.

The cocaine was wrapped in a foil sachet while the ‘rock’ was wrapped in an orange plastic. These retailed at E100 and E50 respectively. Outside the block of flats, was a group of men, dirty and unkept like the surroundings they were found in.

One of them, a Mozambican national was found injecting himself with heroin. Despite the cold temperatures, which were below 20 degrees Celsius, he was clad in a red sports T-shirt, maroon pants and blue slip on sandals depicting that he was oblivious of the cold.
He used a syringe to shove the cocaine up his blood vessels.

The arm, which he was injecting, was filled with blisters which had formed due to the constant piercing of the skin when shoving the narcotics into his body.
