MANZINI – A police officer was taken to task by his ‘in-laws’ for allegedly poisoning and killing his wife before claiming her finances.

Amos Sibonangaye Shongwe of Macetjeni Chiefdom, is alleged to have collaborated with his ‘wife’ Dudu Mamba’s cousin and allegedly forced her to drink a poisonous substance under the pretext that they were helping her since she was sick.

The motive behind Shongwe’s actions was allegedly that he would give Dudu’s plots at Makholweni in Fairview to his grown children. Conflict between Shongwe and Dudu allegedly started after the latter got wind that Shongwe had brought the mother of his other children into her home to show her the plots that would soon belong to her children while she (Dudu) was away in South Africa. These are allegations whose veracity is yet to be tested before court.

After Dudu’s death, Shongwe allegedly buried her at Ngwane Park without the involvement of the Mamba family. This irked them because Shongwe’s justification for this was reportedly that Dudu was his wife whom he married through Swazi law and custom. On the other hand, the Mamba family claimed that they knew one Gideon Groening as their rightful son in-law.

This then ignited a disagreement between the Shongwe and Mamba families, which led to the latter seeking the High Court’s permission to exhume Dudu’s body to determine the cause of her death. Permission was reportedly granted and an autopsy report allegedly confirmed that Dudu had ingested some poisonous substance. This was said in open court on Thursday. Currently, Dudu’s body is at the mortuary pending final judgment on the matter.
