VICTOR SHOT DEAD
MBABANE – Public assassination. This is how the scenario that played itself out at Ezulwini Galp Filling Station could be best described, where football administrator and businessman Victor Gamedze was shot dead.
Two gunshot wounds are said to have claimed the life of the businessman, one in the cheek and the other around the forehead area.
The motive for the killing remains a mystery for now.
The incident happened yesterday at around 7pm just after Gamedze had enjoyed a football match between his team, Mbabane Swallows and sworn rivals Manzini Wanderers at Somhlolo National Stadium.
Swallows won the game.
Information obtained from reliable sources and eyewitnesses is to the effect that the businessman, after the match, drove to Galp Filling Station where he alighted from his car and proceeded to the convenience store.
He was driving in his white Toyota Hilux twin cab.
Eyewitnesses said two men, who were seen driving in a red VW Golf, also went inside the convenience store.
It is suspected that the duo had been following the businessman all this time, though this was oblivious to many, including the businessman himself.
After he had finished his business inside the store, Gamedze, who was wearing a navy blue T-shirt, went straight for his car but before he could get there, one of the gunmen, at close range, aimed the gun to Gamedze’s head and pulled the trigger.
As soon as Gamedze hit the ground, the same gunman again aimed the gun at another side of his head and fired the second shot.
“It happened in a split second. While we were all trying to comprehend what was going on, the gunmen were gone. We couldn’t even ascertain how many they were in the vehicle. All I know is that it was a red Golf car without any number plates,” a source who witnessed the incident explained.
Some of the people who had been with the businessman earlier during the soccer match and had also driven to the filling station are said to have tried to react quickly in rushing the bleeding business magnate to the MediSun Clinic.
He was quickly loaded into one of his fan’s car and taken to the clinic but after about an hour, he was confirmed dead.
The source said by the look of things, this was a planned assassination.
“From my layman’s point view, this was not a robbery. The gunmen knew their target and went for him. They wanted him dead, which is why they fired the second shot after he lay on the ground due to the injury from the first gunshot,” another source chipped in.
Even before he was declared dead by a medical doctor, those at the scene were inclined to presume him dead due to the pool of blood that had welled at the incident scene. Police were later called to the scene and recorded statements with some of the witnesses.
They also gathered evidence found at the scene that could assist in solving the murder case.
