BOARDS, EMABANDLA GET UP TO 96% PAY HIKE
MBABANE - The bulk of the national budget will continue to cover the wage bill as government has increased salaries for commissions and boards by over 50 per cent.
This is according to the Prescription of Statutory Salaries and Allowances of Commissions and Boards Notice, 2018 issued through a government gazette, which was released last week and it officially revokes Legal Notice No.96 of 2013, which was the last time that the commissions had their salaries reviewed. The review reveals one of the highest increases in years, with some members of boards having their salaries upped by over 90 per cent.
The notice covers chairpersons and members of entities such as the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC), Civil Service Commission (CSC), Royal Libandla LaseLudzidzini, Teaching Service Commission, Border Determination Special Committee, Land Management Board, Citizenship Board and the Minerals Management Board and Liqoqo.
It should be noted that the different boards and commissions were left out when government implemented the salary review which was widely known as dvuladvula, and they allegedly sought audience with His Majesty King Mswati III to relay their grievance. According to the new salary structure, EBC Chairman Chief Gija, will now earn E60 029.08 per month, which adds up to E720 349 per annum. The review shows that the chief’s salary has been increased by 50.2 per cent.
The chief is also entitled to a housing allowance of 25 per cent of his basic salary, which equals to E15 007.27 per month. Another entitlement to the chief is an entertainment allowance of 10 per cent of his basic salary, which equals to E6 002.91 and E5 000 per month as communication allowance. Just like all the members of the commissions, the chief is entitled to 100 per cent funeral cover not only for him but his spouse and dependants while in office.
Another chairmanship position which has been included in the gazette is that of the Civil Service Commission (CSC), which is currently held by Peter Mamba. The notice provides that the chairman will now earn E56 399.92 per month, which equals to E679 799 per annum, and this reflects an increment of about 57.5 per cent.
