PIGG’S PEAK – For the first time, a highly revered rastafarian Jamaican high priest will be in the country for rastafarian rituals.

The high priest known as ‘Bongo Wake I’, will be in the country for a prayer which is expected to attract rastafarians around the country.
The high priest will be attending an event known as the celebration of ‘The Battle of the Adowa’, which is also a public holiday in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is the only African country which was never colonised and they boast that their State defeated the European armies.
Bongo Wake I will be accompanied by his wife as well as two rastafarian elders from South Africa (SA), including the chairperson of the South African Council of the Nyahbhinghi.
Bongo Wake I is also referred to as The Ancient.

He is the chairperson of the International Council for the Nyahbhinghi.
Nyahbinghi is a sect of rastafarianism which adheres to strict rules, including a specific diet and they also vow to non violence.
Under the Nyahbinghi, dagga is also considered a sacred herb and is used in ‘the temple’ during prayer.

According to the acting chairperson of the local council for the Nyahbinghi, Ras Terrible, Ancient Bongo Wake I will be visiting the country for the first time.
He said this would be an important occasion for rastafarians because this was the high priest’s maiden visit to the kingdom.

The actual age of Bongo Wake I could not be established but some of the rastafarians believe he is 89 years old, while others claim he is aged 105.
Some believe he is much older, hence the title of ancient.
What is Nyahbinghi?

Nyahbinghi is the order of rastafarian life and literally means ‘death penalty to black and white oppressors’.
