MUTI USAGE, KUCHELA ALLEGATIONS ROCK SIPHO SHONGWE CASE
MBABANE – Muti wars have found their way to the High Court, from the football fields.
This is so because recently, there have been claims and counter-claims of muti usage by some of Matsapha United FC and Mbabane Swallows fans.
This has been the case during the ongoing bail hearing of Matsapha United boss and murder suspect Sipho Shongwe, who is alleged to have killed Victor Gamedze. Gamedze was the chairman of Mbabane Swallows F.C and a prominent businessman, and was gunned down on January 14, 2018 at the Ezulwini Galp Filling Station.

So serious is the situation such that some Matsapha United fans lodged a complaint with the High Court officials, alleging that there was an officer who sprinkled muti in the courtroom every time Shongwe’s matter was scheduled to proceed. The tension among the fans resulting from the suspected usage of muti in the on-going case reached another level on Wednesday when Shongwe declined to sit on one part of the bench in the accused dock after he spotted a suspicious substance.
Despite that the substance was wiped off the bench, Shongwe, who believed it was muti, refused to occupy that part of the bench. Instead, he sat towards the far end of the accused dock.
This is contrary to previous reports that Shongwe refused to enter the holding cell on fears of muti.
“The muti scare was when the accused entered the dock where he noticed something which, according to him, appeared sinister,” said one of the senior officers.
Shongwe is reported to have told the senior warders and police officers who were escorting him that he was not prepared to utilise the space where the substance he suspected to be muti was.
