MOBILE MONEY TO CHARGE FOR SEC, WATER PAYMENTS
MBABANE – As convenient as the service is, Mobile Money (MM) users will now have to dig deeper into their pockets.
This is because Swazi MTN has announced a tariff increase on some MM services, effective April 1, 2018.
According to Swazi MTN’s Corporate Affairs Manager Mandla Luphondvo, the primary reason behind the increase in the tariffs was caused by the increasing costs of running the platform plus the innovations that had been introduced since inception.
“Since the commencement of the platform in 2011, most, if not all the services provided on Mobile Money, have never increased, while some are free,” said Luphondvo.
Services that will see a new charge include the purchase of electricity units from Swaziland Electricity Company (SEC).
Currently there was no fee charged when purchasing electricity, but now depending on the amount of units being purchased, come next month the charges could range from E1.50 to E10.
Settling water bills will also come with a charge as the newly-proposed structure states that depending on the amount of money a customer is paying, the charge will range from E1 to E10. Transferring money to a MM user is also expected to increase at most from E1 to E2. However, those sending amounts between E1 001 to E2 001 will now pay E11 instead of the current E7.
Withdrawing cash or cash-out, as the service is called, is also expected to increase by E1 to E2 and in instances where the money is in the region of E4 000, it will increase by E4.
All Dstv payments will be a standard E10, while payments of other services such as taxes to Swaziland Revenue Authority (SRA) and payments to Swaziland Royal Insurance Corporation (SRIC) will also slightly increase.
