MANZINI- Unlike other dagga-related deaths, a 34-year-old man was subjected to inhuman treatment by his alleged killers.

Zandondo residents woke up to the shocking news that Bonginkhosi Mgobo Vilakati was no more. He was allegedly found with only his vest on and without pants. His whole body was covered in assault marks and most shockingly, his skin was peeled off from the buttocks and down to his legs. Residents allegedly found him lying near a river with his feet in the sand while his head had been submerged into the water.
The body was found yesterday morning at Emncweba River in Zandondo.

According to sources, Mgobo, as he was popularly referred to, was attacked by three men on Tuesday night when he had gone to the shop to buy some cigarettes. The sources alleged that the attack was linked to suspicions that Mgobo had stolen some dagga from one of his attackers.
The sources added that earlier, the man, whose nine bags of 20 litre dagga was stolen; had his house broken into through the roof allegedly by Mgobo. The man allegedly suspected Mgobo to be the one behind his loss.
This was allegedly because Mgobo had previously been implicated in the theft of another family’s 15 bags of dagga and later confessed to committing the crime.

In the recent incident that led to his death, it was believed that Mgobo was first assaulted with a stick (imvubu) all over the body before being tied with a rope.
It was believed that the rope, which was later found beside his body at the river, was used to drag him for a distance of about one kilometre from where the suspects attacked him to the river. This was believed to have happened at around 1am; possibly after a prolonged assault.

During a visit to Mgobo’s home, his mother confirmed the witnesses’ statements and said there were trail marks on the path where he was allegedly dragged into the river. Sibongile Vilakati said after she received the news yesterday morning, she went to the scene where Mgobo’s body was found.
Vilakati said her son’s face was unwounded and he had no stab wounds to show that his attackers were heavily armed.
