MANZINI – Health practitioners and security personnel at the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital got the shock of their lives when they found a newborn baby stuffed in a backpack within the health facility premises.

The backpack belongs to a man, unknown to any of the hospital personnel, who was found loitering in one of the abandoned houses within the institution.
The vigilant hospital security guards heard some noise coming from the abandoned building and  went to investigate.

They were shocked to find the already dead baby stuffed in the backpack.
The team of security guards is said to have suspected that there was someone who had made the abandoned building a ‘home’ and after hearing the noise, they decided to investigate.
The building is situated near the Emergency Room main entrance, where ambulances and vehicles drop off critically ill or injured patients.

Information gathered is that some Southern Africa Nazarene University (SANU) students and employees at the hospital had been told that there was a man who would be seen going in and out of the building which did not have a door, on a daily basis.

The building’s wooden door was destroyed by the recent heavy rains.
Yesterday at about 2am, a team of security guards went into the building and found the man who is suspected to be in his 30s inside.
He was found on his way out of the building with the bag that had the baby stuffed inside on his back.

The baby’s head was, however, protruding to the outside.
When asked what he was doing with the baby, the man said he had found it within the hospital premises.
However, he refused to divulge further information when probed further.

The baby had no clothing on and was not even wrapped in a blanket or anything. Some of its clothing were found also stuffed in the bag.
The man maintained that the dead baby belonged to him but failed to state what he was doing in the abandoned house.

When the guards inspected the interior of the building, pieces of old clothing and pink underwear were found.
RFM Hospital Administrator Leonard Dlamini was immediately contacted by the employees who had at the time gathered near the building. Dlamini suggested that the police be called to the hospital to record statements and further question the man who was found with the baby.
