MBABANE – It is not everyday where one can escape from the grasp of a three metre - long python.

However, a 27-year-old man of Mhlumeni in the Lubombo region has lived to tell his miraculous survival from the ferocious grasp of the fearsome reptile. The incident occurred two weeks before the Easter holidays.

He said he was on his way to chop some firewood in a nearby forest, when he suddenly felt a tight grip on his right leg. His first reaction was to look around to see what had entangled him, only to be confronted by the monstrous snake.

“I was terrified by the incident and I fell down. I was later told by people who know pythons that the reason I managed to escape was when I fell.
“The snake struggled to coil itself around me except for the lower part of my leg,” he said.

coil him further
He said while trying to stand up and run, the snake made one attempt to coil itself around his knees, and from there brought forward its head towards his face.

“We were now face to face, when I decided to grab it by its neck to stifle its movement. We then wrestled for a few minutes, and during that struggle, I managed to get a sharp stick which I used to stab it around the neck. I suspect the pain from the stabbing forced it to unwrap itself and try to slither away from the scene,” he said.

The snake survivor said he then picked up his bush knife that had fallen from his hand the minute the snake coiled his legs. He chopped its back several times until it was motionless.

“I wobbled home, to raise an alarm about what had just happened. I am still terrified whenever I think about the incident, but I thank God for giving the strength to fight back and conquer,” he said.
He said they first suspected that there might be a preying python around the area, when dogs and goats started disappearing.
