KALANGA – A civil servant allegedly stabbed his wife to death with a knife before taking his own life, by ingesting a weevil tablet, in what is believed to be yet another case of crime of passion.
The gruesome incident, which has traumatised people who were very close to the couple, took place in the early hours of Friday at KaLanga area, not very far from the Siteki Town centre.
Mxolisi Hlophe allegedly killed his wife Rose Mavimbela (43), while they were at her parental homestead at KaLanga before he committed suicide.
Hlophe was employed as a cordon guard under the Ministry of Agriculture and was based at the Foot and Mouth Disease Cordon Fence near Mzilikazi in Siteki, while his wife was unemployed.
She had worked for years at a textile factory in Siteki, which shut down in December last year, following the death of its director.
Information reaching this publication was to the effect that the couple argued over the wife’s alleged infidelity before the husband allegedly stabbed her multiple times with the knife in the upper body.
Mavimbela’s body, which had multiple stabs wounds, was discovered by family members on Friday morning.
According to close family members, the couple had been together since Thursday, and it is assumed that the quarrel, which eventually ended with the fatal stabbing, may have started during the night.
Narrating the incident, the mother of the deceased wife, Thabile Hlatshwayo, said she was in her flat in Siteki when she received the sad news of her daughter’s death.
She said somebody called and informed her that her daughter’s body had been found lying in a pool of blood.
