MPOLONJENI – There was excitement, ululation and tears at Mpolonjeni Royal Kraal near Siteki yesterday, when the ruling Dvuba clan pronounced the name of their new chief.

Sibusiso Dvuba (28), a soldier based at Phocweni, was pronounced as the new chief of the area and he is now awaiting official endorsement by Their Majesties, as per dictates of Swazi custom. Dvuba broke into tears and wept immediately after he was presented to the scores of excited residents, who had long called for the installation of a new chief in the area. “From today onwards, you have to respect him. He is now your father. When you meet him along the way; show some respect. He is also my father despite my age,” said senior Prince Madubula Dvuba, as he held the hand of the new chief. Earlier, another senior, prince Elijah Mgodzi Dvuba, had told members of the ruling clan inside the main house to pray that the new chief gets the blessings of Their Majesties.

He stressed that the new chief would not be able to officially perform his duties unless he was officially endorsed and blessed by Their Majesties. “We have all agreed as members of the Dvuba clan that we want to do this job and complete it for the benefit of the people of Mpolonjeni,” he stated. The new chief’s official title is Jabhane II. According to senior members of the clan, the name is derived from the first leader of the Dvuba clan; Jabhane Dvuba, who died many years ago. Jabhane II is the son of Bhekindlela Dvuba, an heir to the chieftaincy but who died in December 2015 before he could be installed. Bhekindlela was the son of Chief Macebo Dvuba, who is still recognised in official documents as the traditional authority of Mpolonjeni Royal Kraal in Siteki. Meanwhile, the ceremony was characterised by singing and ululation.

Pastors also took turns praying and sharing the word of God. “Don’t be surprised to see so many pastors at the royal kraal; it’s a Sunday today,” said the programme director. Speaking to journalists after the event, the shy-looking new chief said he was overcome with emotion when he was presented to the public. Nevertheless, he expressed satisfaction with the numbers of people who witnessed the event. He promised that once he was blessed by Their Majesties, he would work for the people of Mpolonjeni. The event was attended by residents of Mpolonjeni and senior members of the ruling Dvuba clan, including Chief Petros Dvuba of Mpolonjeni in Mbabane and Mpolonjeni MP Jacob Siwela.
Solomon Dube, the Director General of the Swaziland Civil Aviation Authority (SWACAA), was also present. He is a member of the ruling Dvuba clan.
