MBABANE – SWADEPA wants to campaign in all parts of the country unhindered on behalf of its members who choose to join the race to parliament.

This is one of the prayers of the Swaziland Democratic Party (SWADEPA) in the political party’s application which has been filed in the High Court.

According to SWADEPA, there is nothing preventing political parties from campaigning for particular candidates between the primary and secondary elections.

SWADEPA President, who is also Manzini North Member of Parliament (MP), Jan Sithole, has declared in the party’s founding affidavit that he intends to stand for re-election in the elections to be held later this year.

Sithole said if he would be re-elected, he intended to advance SWADEPA’s political agenda as an integral part of his work as an MP.
The Manzini North MP informed the court that he had already registered to vote.

In its application in court, SWADEPA wants the court to interdict the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) and government from preventing it, and any other political party which chooses to sponsor and support candidates for election who run for parliament, from publicly identifying and expressing their support to members.

SWADEPA further seeks an order stopping the EBC and government from seconding party members to constitute a candidate’s campaign team as contemplated by Section 3(3) of the Elections and Expenses Act as read with Section 40(2) of the Elections Act 10 of 2013.
