EMASWATI LOVE BOOZE, SAYS WHO

MBABANE – The people of the Kingdom of Eswatini are fond of the waters of immortality.
According to the World Health Organisation Statistics 2018, the level of alcohol abuse in the Kingdom of Eswatini is at an alarmingly high rate.


Out of 47 African countries, the country was ranked the sixth where the harmful use of alcohol, defined according to the national context as alcohol per capita consumption (aged 15 years and older) within a calendar year in litres of pure alcohol, was high.


According to the report, the total alcohol per capita (15 years of age) consumption in litres of pure alcohol stands at 9.9.
The kingdom has been listed with countries such as Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Seychelles, Nigeria and South Sudan as the ones where the harmful use of alcohol was high.


Countries which were found  to be having a low harmful use of alcohol included Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Algeria, Eritrea, Mali and Madagascar.
Interestingly, the statistics tell a different story when it comes to tobacco use as it revealed that it was low.


According to the report, the age-standardised prevalence of current tobacco use among persons aged 15 years and older was low and the kingdom was listed with the top 10 of the best countries in the continent.
In the overall analysis, the report stated that the worldwide level of alcohol consumption in 2016 was 6.4 litres of pure alcohol per person aged 15 years or older, a level that remained stable since 2010.


It was noted in the report that the consumption levels and trends varied across WHO regions.
Consumption in the South-East Asia Region increased by almost 30 per cent since 2010, while that of the European Region decreased by 12 per cent, but remaining the highest in the world in 2016 at 9.8 litres of pure alcohol per person aged 15 years or older.
