MBABANE – A high-ranking member of the army, whose rank is that of Major General, is accused of defiantly constructing a residential structure on land reserved for business development.

The army man, whose name will not be revealed because he could not be reached for comment regarding the accusations, was recently promoted by His Majesty King Mswati III from the position of brigadier.

Until this publication went for print, the soldier’s mobile phone was not available on the MTN network.
The land in question is at KaShali in the Manzini region and is under the jurisdiction of the Masundvwini Royal Kraal – His Majesty the King’s birthplace.

ordered to stop construction

Residents of the area told the Times SUNDAY that the top soldier had been ordered to stop the construction but they were surprised to see that he was not complying.

“That land is earmarked and reserved for development projects. When we asked the chairman of the Masundvwini Council why they were allowing the construction to continue, he told us that as far as they were concerned, the army man was told to stop building his house there,” a resident, who is well-versed with what happens in the area, said.

He said the land was reserved for projects such as shopping centres and warehouses, which are to be funded through the Regional Development Fund.

“That land is where income-generating projects are to be located. There are already proposals for the building of supermarkets in that area. It is therefore confusing to us how the top soldier is being allowed to continue building a residential structure on that land,” the resident said.
